Be in the Know: Side Effects of Veneers Treatment

April 11, 2025

If you’ve ever seen an ad for medical treatment, you know practically everything comes with a side effect or two. Porcelain veneers are no exception; however, with some patience and understanding, you can make it to the other side, where the negative side effects fade, and you can enjoy all the positives of a beautiful, stunning smile! What are these side effects? Continue reading to find out!

Sensitivity

Unfortunately, an important step toward a perfect smile involves taking away a small sliver of enamel from the front of your treated teeth. With this thinner protective layer, tooth sensitivity is common when getting veneers, especially with your temporary stand-ins. However, once your custom veneers have been placed and glued on, your sensitivity should lessen within a week. If this symptom continues, let your dentist know!

Wrong Color

In your excitement to see the results, you may want to rush through the early steps of ordering your veneers. However, if you don’t take your time in identifying the color properly, you could end up with fake-looking teeth that stand out in the wrong shade of white. Slow down when your dentist brings out the color guide and try to focus on finding that perfect match that blends in with the rest of your teeth and looks like veneers belong there.

Swollen Gums

When designing your veneers, your dentist measures long enough that the shells’ edge will tuck just barely under the gums—like your teeth naturally appear to do. When they are installed, your gums may feel a little irritated or even swollen. This side effect should subside within a couple of days as they adjust to the coverings. If it doesn’t, you may need to talk to your dentist about a gum infection.

Sore Cheeks from Smiling More

Before veneers, you likely wanted to show your smile as infrequently as possible, embarrassed of what others would see. Now that you have a flawless smile, you might want to show it off whenever you can! If that’s the case, don’t be surprised if your cheeks feel a little sore right at first, but you’ll soon get used to sharing your brilliant smile more often.

Increase in Confidence

After receiving your veneers, you may hear your friends, family, co-workers, and others compliment your smile. You may also find that you feel more self-esteem about your appearance. In fact, you may have the confidence to interview for a better job, have the courage to talk to your crush, or make a huge sale with customers. Veneers can’t guarantee success, but they can help! This increase in confidence cannot only help you have stronger mental health but open opportunities in your professional and social life!

Unlike medications on an ad, veneers bring very few negative side effects and plenty of positive results. Taking your time upfront, trusting the process, being patient, and diligently keeping up your at-home oral hygiene can ensure only a short time with possible negative side effects. Otherwise, you can simply cherish having a smile you’re proud of for many years.
