Whether you call yourself a foodie or not—you love it. When you had a full smile, you looked forward to meals and snacks, and perhaps you would love to cook or bake as a hobby again. Maybe you love expressing your creativity in the kitchen. However, during the first week after you have a dental implant placed, your diet needs to adapt to help you bounce back from the procedure. Here is a list of foods you should stay away from for a while if you want to limit complications and have a smoother recovery.
Hard, Crunchy Foods
Even if you enjoy chips, nuts, or other crunchy foods, right after dental implant surgery is not the time to have them. Although your teeth may not be sore for more than a day or two, your mouth may be sensitive overall, and these hard bits of food can irritate the surgical site or blood clot. Instead, soft foods like oatmeal, eggs, yogurt, and mashed potatoes are gentle on the tender tissue and won’t remove the essential clot.
Chewy Foods
Tender steak, gooey substances, and other foods requiring a lot of chewing should be avoided for at least a few days following this procedure because your mouth will need to rest and recover. Although it is considered minor, dental implant placement is still surgery! You wouldn’t expect someone to run a marathon after an appendectomy, right? Give your mouth time to recover from the procedure before you challenge it with chewy foods.
Spicy Foods
As delicious as spicy foods can taste, they can disturb the protective blood clot. The heat can create a burning sensation or aggravate inflammation, potentially leading to complications in healing. It’s best to wait a full week—or until the site closes completely—to reintroduce spicy foods into your diet. By then, your risk of unpleasantness is far lower, so you can enjoy foods you love without pain.
Anything Using a Straw
Although smoothies are perfectly acceptable while you heal from dental implant surgery, it’s important to keep straws away for at least 48 hours. Even when drinking water, you shouldn’t use one because the sucking motion required for straws can pull the blood clot off the surgical site, increasing your chances of dry socket, a painful infection. Use a spoon or drink fluids out of a cup to preserve the clot and protect the healing tissues underneath.
In the end, you may need to take a break from your exciting palette and have tamer foods in the aftermath of dental implant placement, but it’s only one week. It’s a small sacrifice to make to obtain strong, stable teeth that will allow you to enjoy your favorite foods again!
