Potentially Risky Summer Activities for Your Smile

July 2, 2026

In the last few weeks of summer, it’s not too late to enjoy the excitement of the season! However, not every aspect of summer is all fun—some parts can be dangerous as well. Whether you’re staying in town or traveling somewhere else, here are some risks for your smile and how you can protect it!

Sunburn to Your Lips

Sunlight is a great source of Vitamin D, but being out for too long can be painful and harmful. Whether you’re light or dark skinned, sunscreen protects your outmost layer from damaging ultraviolet rays. You may put on sunscreen elsewhere, but remember your lips can become burned too and eventually develop a mouth cancer! Lip balm with SPF can block UV exposure and keep your lips healthy while you’re out on your adventures!

Too Much Swimming

Especially if you or your child swims competitively or for exercise, you may notice yellow or even brown stains starting to form on your teeth. “Swimmer’s calculus” comes from your saliva proteins negatively reacting to the pool chemicals. Although these stains are purely aesthetic, your dentist can help you get rid of them and prevent them from coming back in the future.

Snacking During Vacation and Celebrations

On a road trip or in another country, snacking and tasting delicious food is part of any adventure. However, if you find yourself indulging a little too much, you may notice the difference not only in your waistline but also your smile. Sweet, carb-filled foods feed bacteria in your mouth, encouraging cavities and gum-inflaming infection. By all means, make sure you eat and enjoy while you travel, but try to make smile-friendly choices like apples, carrots, and cucumbers, and be sure to sip plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated!

Sports Injuries to the Mouth

Spending more time outside may mean playing more sports, with or without intentional contact. Even seemingly benign sports like soccer, softball, or even riding a bike can result in chipping or knocking out a tooth. Before you head out the door, put together a plan if something goes wrong! Wherever you are, select a nearby dentist you would turn to in a dental emergency. That way, you know who to call if the need arises.

Ultimately, when you look back at this summer, you want to remember all the good things. Although you can’t eliminate all the dangers and risks that summer poses to your smile, you can make smart choices so that any damage doesn’t detract from your precious memories.
