3 Advantages to Scheduling Extraction for Your Teen’s Wisdom Teeth in Lincoln This Summer

At your teen’s dental appointment, you get the news: your child has impacted wisdom teeth in Lincoln. Your dentist tells you that these teeth need to be removed or the rest of their teeth could become overcrowded or they could develop an oral infection. So, of course, you look ahead, trying to plan the timing of this procedure. Well, there’s no time like the present, and the present is summer, a time when most teens have a wide open schedule. If possible, take the opportunity to have this surgery done sometime during these months so that you can enjoy these three benefits.

Your teen can have plenty of time to recover and heal properly.

Although wisdom teeth extraction is considered minor oral surgery, your teen still needs to take it easy for a few days afterward. In fact, they should refrain from strenuous activities for at least two days and should be resting for at least the first 24 hours. That’s plenty of time for your teen to play on their phone, read, or binge watch movies or shows! Is that what your teen was doing anyway?

For the first few hours after the procedure, they should keep gauze on the site until a blood clot has formed there. This clot plays an essential role in preventing infection and enabling your child to heal properly. They can brush their teeth gently as they normally would, but they need to avoid the extraction site. To keep that area clean, they need to rinse with warm salt water.

Your teen can take advantage of the season with cool, soft treats.

Can you think of a better time for a bowl of cold ice cream than during summer? When your teen has their wisdom teeth extracted, they will need to eat soft foods for at least a few days afterward. That means Jell-O, ice cream, yogurt, watermelon, and more are all fair game! But it’s important they avoid anything that requires a straw because the sucking motion can dislodge the blood clot and lead to an infection called dry socket. As time goes on, you can start to reintroduce more types of foods to their diet until they’re back to normal.

Your teen will be able to focus better on their studies when school starts again.

By taking care of this necessary procedure during the summer months, your teen won’t have to take precious time away from school to have this issue resolved. That way, they can focus on learning the material, succeeding in school, and preparing for their next steps in life.

Your teen will have tons of time to have fun this summer. You just need a little bit of it to get this procedure taken care of so that they can keep their smile happy and healthy. Putting it off until later could endanger their oral and overall health and interfere with their studies. If your child needs their wisdom teeth extracted, act now! Work with your dentist in Lincoln to schedule the appointment early enough that your child will be ready for the new school year to start.
