Your Dentist Answers Questions on Emergency Dental Care in Lincoln

man with mouth pain. It’s another beautiful, breezy day in Lincoln, so you decide to go bike-riding with a couple friends. You hadn’t ridden a bike since last year, but that doesn’t stop you. As you ride out of the suburb and into the town area, you start to get a little nervous. Because you were watching out for cars and pedestrians, you don’t notice the curb and slam your front tire into it.

After landing face-first, you feel a sharp pain in your mouth. After finding your tooth on the ground, you realize you need to seek emergency dental care in Lincoln right away. Questions fly through you head: “What do I do when my tooth is knocked out?” “What if there’s something stuck in my mouth?” You wonder. Don’t panic, your emergency dentist is here to answer that and more.

What Do I Do If I Knock Out My Tooth?

If your permanent tooth is knocked out, the first step is to find the tooth and keep it as moist as possible. After getting a container to place it in, fill it with either milk, saline solution, or a small amount of saliva to prevent it from drying out. You can also use a tooth preservation product approved by the ADA.

If no container is available, stick it in between your cheek and gums. Additionally, you can also try placing the tooth back in the socket (avoid touching the root if you try this.) Simply place it back into the socket, gently bite down to keep it in place, and get to your dentist.

How Do I Remove an Object That’s Stuck in My Mouth or Teeth?

Start by rinsing your mouth will warm water to loosen the object and soothe your gums. Take a long piece of floss and carefully try to dislodge the object; this is the most sanitary method for removing foreign objects.

Don’t use any sharp or pointed objects to remove it as this could irritate your gums further, causing more discomfort. Since the object could cause severe pain and/or an infection, get to your dentist right away.

How Do I Treat a Toothache?

If you’re feeling tooth pain after an accident, you’ll want to visit your dentist right away so they can provide necessary treatment. If you’re unsure of the source of pain, rinse your mouth out with warm water and then check if a food debris or other foreign object is rubbing against your tooth.

You can also take painkillers such as Tylenol to address the pain but you should avoid aspirin. Applying aspirin directly to your gum tissue can cause it to burn.

How Do I Avoid a Dental Emergency?

To prevent dental emergencies, visit your dentist every six months so they can catch underlying conditions before they worsen. Otherwise, you should:

  • Wear mouthguards while playing sports or doing other physical activities
  • Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candy
  • Avoid using your teeth on inedible objects

Thanks to your emergency dentist in Lincoln, you’ll always be prepared. If you have more questions, make sure to mention them at your next dental appointment!
